Come see a movie

Linguistics at the Sundance Film Festival? We just heard about this a few days ago. The Linguists is a new movie about the extinction of languages around the world, following David Harrison and Gregory Anderson as they go on three expeditions to document languages that are nearly gone. Hollywood Reporter loved it. The movie is playing three times in the next couple of weeks around Boston, a free screening at MIT and twice as part of the International Film Festival Boston:

Exhibit at ACAL 39

Cascadilla Press will exhibit several books at the 39th Annual Conference on African Linguistics (ACAL 39) at the University of Georgia, Athens, from April 17-20, 2008. We’ll have proceedings from ACAL 35, ACAL 36, and ACAL 37 on display, as well as some of our other linguistics titles. The proceedings from ACAL 38 will be published later in 2008, and the proceedings from ACAL 39 will be published in 2009. Advance orders are welcome.

Environmental news

The book printer we use for offset printing has been widely recognized as a leader in environmental responsibility in the printing industry. We were delighted to learn that they now offer FSC-certified paper (cover and text) which we’ll be using for offset print runs starting this month with the forthcoming BUCLD 32 Proceedings paperbacks. That’s an immediate benefit of over 400,000 pages shifted over to FSC-certified paper. We hope our digital book printers will make a similar shift soon.

Exhibit at LSRL 38

Cascadilla Press will exhibit several books at the 38th Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages (LSRL 38) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from April 4-6, 2008. We’re showcasing some of our collection of textbooks and edited collections on Spanish linguistics, such as Robert Hammond’s textbook The Sounds of Spanish. Later this year we’ll be publishing two great new books on Spanish linguistics—details coming soon!

Exhibit at HEL-LEX 2

Cascadilla Press will exhibit several books at the second symposium on New Approaches in English Historical Lexis (HEL-LEX 2) in Lammi, Finland (north of Helsinki), from April 25-27, 2008. Among the books on display will be the Selected Proceedings of the 2005 Symposium on New Approaches in English Historical Lexis (HEL-LEX), which we published in 2006. We will publish the proceedings of HEL-LEX 2 in early 2009.

This volume contains 9 papers selected from the papers and posters presented at the morphology conference 5th Décembrettes, which was held at the University of Toulouse-le Mirail on December 7-8, 2006. The conference had one day devoted to analogy and lexical pressure in morphology, and a number of papers examine analogy in morphology. Other papers address interfaces between morphology and other domains of linguistics: phonology, semantics, typology, and psycholinguistics. All of the papers are centered on data, but the authors explore general theoretical questions along with specific analyses.

Cascadilla Press will have a book display at the 32nd Boston University Conference on Language Development at Boston University on November 2-4, 2007. We will be exhibiting all of our recent books, software, and teaching aids, including past BUCLD Proceedings. We will also have several items there from our CafePress shop, such as our language immersion bibs and syntactician teddy bears. The proceedings of BUCLD 32 will be published in 2008 by Cascadilla Press.

Exhibit at SLRF 2007

Cascadilla Press will have a book display at the 2007 Second Language Research Forum at UIUC on October 11-14, 2007. Our display will focus on recent conference proceedings in language acquisition and past SLRF Proceedings. Our syntax font Arboreal is a great way to create syntactic trees, and works with the latest MacOS 10.4 and Windows Vista operating systems, as well as with older Mac and Windows systems. This volume contains 16 papers selected from the 37th Annual Conference on African Linguistics (ACAL 37), which was held at the University of Oregon on April 6-9, 2006.
