Suggestions for a new edition of Surviving Linguistics

Front cover imageMonica Macaulay is working on a new edition of her very popular Surviving Linguistics: A Guide for Graduate Students. We’d like your suggestions: What would you like to see in a new edition? What changes would you make? What’s missing that you would like to see? Do you have advice of your own to offer to linguistics grad students and those considering graduate school in linguistics?

The current edition has some sections that are primarily aimed at grad students in North America. If you’re a professor or grad student elsewhere, tell us about graduate school where you are. How is it different from or similar to what is described in the book? Do you think the expectations and experiences of grad students are reasonably universal, given the natural variation in everyone’s personal experiences? Or is graduate school and the academic job search significantly different in Australia or Japan or Germany or England or elsewhere?

You can leave your short or long suggestions here in the comments, or send them via e-mail to Cascadilla Press or Monica Macaulay. We’re eager to hear from you!

Guide to the Phonetic Symbols of Spanish presents the many phonetic symbols and symbol systems that linguists have used for the sounds of Spanish. The book includes an overview of the Spanish sound system and a helpful glossary of phonetic terms. Guide to the Phonetic Symbols of Spanish will prove invaluable for scholars and students of Spanish phonetics and phonology, and a necessary resource for linguists who encounter the abundance of phonetic symbols used for Spanish.

Come see a movie

Linguistics at the Sundance Film Festival? We just heard about this a few days ago. The Linguists is a new movie about the extinction of languages around the world, following David Harrison and Gregory Anderson as they go on three expeditions to document languages that are nearly gone. Hollywood Reporter loved it. The movie is playing three times in the next couple of weeks around Boston, a free screening at MIT and twice as part of the International Film Festival Boston:

April 24, 7:00-8:30 pm, MIT, free screening and discussion with David Harrison (details)
April 26, 12:00-1:15 pm, Brattle Theatre (details)
April 28, 5:15-6:30 pm, Somerville Theatre (details)

If you’d like a free ticket for the April 28 showing at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square courtesy of Cascadilla Press, send us an e-mail by April 17 with your name and mailing address. (If you did not receive a reply from us, post a comment here.) There are a limited number of tickets that we can buy for this showing, so please only request a ticket if you will definitely use it.

Update: We’ve placed our ticket order, and we’ll be mailing out the tickets to everyone who requested them on April 22. See you at the movie!

Environmental news

The book printer we use for offset printing has been widely recognized as a leader in environmental responsibility in the printing industry. We were delighted to learn that they now offer FSC-certified paper (cover and text) which we’ll be using for offset print runs starting this month with the forthcoming BUCLD 32 Proceedings paperbacks. That’s an immediate benefit of over 400,000 pages shifted over to FSC-certified paper. We hope our digital book printers will make a similar shift soon.
